SECTION 04720 – CAST STONE PART 1 – GENERAL 1.01
DESCRIPTION A. Scope: Provide labor, materials, equipment, and supervision required to complete the manufacture of all Architectural Cast Stone as indicated on the drawings and/or specified herein. 1.02
QUALITY ASSURANCE A. In order to qualify as an approved equal, a manufacturer must be recognized by the industry as a manufacturer of this type of material and can show successful completion of similar and comparable work. B. Setting and erection of the Architectural Cast Stone shall be performed under the supervision of a Contractor or Sub-Contractor experienced in this type of work. 1.03
SUBMITTALS A. Submit shop and setting drawings of stone work to architect for approval. Drawings shall accurately show in detail the sizes, sections, profiles, joint arrangement, reinforcing, method of anchoring, and other necessary details. B. Samples of stone finish and color shall be submitted for selection and approval by Architect. Samples should represent a full range of color and texture. C. Do not begin manufacturing until shop drawings and samples are approved. PART 2 – PRODUCTS 2.01
CAST STONE A. Cast stone shall be equal to the product of Cates Cast Stone. The manufacturer shall have satisfactorily produced work of this nature for at least five (5) years. B. Stone work shall be cast to the sizes and profil;es indicated or required by the Drawings. Exposed faces shall be true and sharp, with lines and mouldings sharp and straight. C. Cement shall be Portland Cement conforming to ASTM C-150, Type I or III. D. Fine and coarse aggregate sall conform to ASTM C-33. Variation from the aggregate gradations of ASTM C-33 are permissible for the facing mix. E. Stone texture and color shall match the architect submittals. F. Physical properties of all cast stone shall be not less than 5000 p.s.i. compressive strength, with absorption not less than 3% and not more than 7%. G. Stone shall be properly cured and seasoned not less than 28 days, and guaranteed against cracks and crazing for a period of one year. H. Any chipping, cracks, or mishandling after panels are delivered to the jobsite shall be the responsibility of the installation contractor. 2.02
REINFORCING STEEL A. Hot-dip galvanized steel reinforcing shall be provided as detailed and as required to resist stresses due to shrinkage, handling, structural loading, and anchor assemblies. B. Reinforcement shall conform to ASTM C-615, 616, or 617 for deformed reinforcing bars. 2.03
ANCHORS A. Stainless steel anchor imbeds shall be provided for anchorage of the cast stone sections. Anchor types, design, sizes, and spacing shall be determined by the manufacturer and shall be as required for a permanent, rigid and safe installation. B. Anchors shall be galvanized after they have been bent and fabricated. Hot dip galvanizing shall conform to ASTM A-153. 2.04
MORTAR A. Mortar shall be proportioned using one part non-staining white Portland cement to one part hydrated lime to six parts mason’s sand. Tint mortar if required to match cast stone. PART 3 – EXECUTION 3.01
INSTALLATION A. All stone shall be set accurately in strict accordance with the Contract Documents and approved Shop Drawings. When necessary, before setting, all stone shall be thoroughly cleaned on all exposed surfaces by washing with brush and soap powder, followed by a thorough drenching with clear water. Just prior to setting, all stones not thoroughly wet shall be sponged or drenched with clean water. B. Each section of cast stone shall be secured to the masonry wall with a minimum of two (2) ½ inch diameter dowels (stainless steel), furnished by the installation contractor. C. All cast stone work shall be set level, plumb, square and true with uniform joints. D. Stones shall be shimmed to correct elevation by use or lead wedges. E. Joints shall be filled solid with mortar and surface-tooled as slight concave joints. F. The receipt, storage and protection of cast stone prior to, during, and subsequent to installation shall be the responsibility of General Contractor and the cost of such protection shall be borne by him. During construction, tops of walls shall be carefully covered at night and in bad weather. At all times walls shall be adequately protected from drippings and heavy rains. G. Sand blast, wire brushes, or acids will not be permitted under any circumstances for the cleaning of stone work. Soap powder, clean water and fiber brushes may be used or approved machine cleaning process. END OF SECTION
